Are infections of gastrostomies not leaks?

Résumé

The article by Clarke et al. on morbidity and mortality after gastrostomies [1] is important in daily practice, but the high prevalence of treatments for site infection (38%) is surprising. It is not in accordance with our experience, nor with a study on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients (prevalences: 12–22%) [2], nor with a Cochrane analysis [3] (prevalences: 2.9–11.6%). In our practice of home enteral nutrition (EN), like for Clarke et al., the majority of patients suffer from neurological diseases.
