Sándor Radó, The geographer and the intelligence officer The Hungarian Sándor Radó was, along with Richard Sorge and Leopold Trepper, one of the most distinguished Soviet secret agents during the Second World War. He was a peculiar figure in that he was at one and the same time an intelligence officer and an innovative geographer. Guillaume Bourgeois explores the process which led him from political activism to complete mastery of an academic discipline, and further still from a geopolitical approach of cartography to the management of an intelligence ring. The author evokes successively the fragile conditions of Radó's survival in a gulag and the circumstances of his return to Budapest - this time as one of the regime's strong men and leader of the post-Stalinist Hungarian school of geography. His trials and his tribulations are representative of a large portion of communist history and at the same time shed light on relations and exchanges between the Eastern and Western blocs as far as world cartography was concerned.

L'originalité de ce Hongrois tient à ce qu'il fut, en même temps qu'un officier de renseignement, un géographe distingué et pour le moins inventif. Guillaume Bourgeois retrace la démarche qui le conduisit du militantisme communiste à la maîtrise d'une discipline savante, puis d'une approche géopolitique de la cartographie à la direction d'un réseau de renseignement. Il aborde les aspects singuliers et précaires de sa vie au goulag avant d'évoquer son retour à Budapest - homme fort du régime et patron de l'école géographique hongroise post-stalinienne. Les vicissitudes de son sort résument l'histoire du monde communiste en même temps qu'elles éclairent les conditions des échanges entre l'Ouest et l'Est pour ce qui touche à la cartographie mondiale.
